BWA Vanguard Gallery of the Ministry of Culture and Art, Wrocław, Poland^[1]

The National Exhibition of Paintings by New Artists curated by Andrzej Pass to inaugurate the Symposium for the Promotion of Visual Arts, presented works by 43 “most distinguishable individualities among painters of the new generation” (from BWA Catalogue, May 1980).

The Show and Conference organizers sent out invitations with Call for Entries to all 23 regional chapters of the Association of the Polish Artists and Designers. Their own curators made selections from among the new ZPAP members who graduated from the Academy in recent years. Tylman was one of two artists selected to represent Kraków. “It might be useful to paint a broader picture of what the intention was of the show organizers. They did not wish to exhibit the viewpoints, or conventions with which young painters express themselves. Nor did they intend to endorse their regional associations. 2. Notably, the National Exhibition of Paintings by New Artists known in Polish as Wystawa im. Cwenarskiego became a steppingstone for a series of similar competitions named after Eugeniusz Geppert and organized at the BWA Gallery in Wrocław every two years beginning in 1989 when Poland regained its independence from the Soviets.
